Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is European Union wide network of nature protection areas. The aim of the network is to protect rare or endangered animal and plant species and natural habitats. This network consists of two types of territories: 1) Habitats sites and 2) Birds sites. Natura 2000 areas are established in those territories where species are rapidly disappearing or where the most important nature conservation areas exist. After becoming a member of European Union Lithuania must maintain protection of species which are listed in Birds and Habitats directives, and establish specific protected areas as well as provide their protection. Šaukliai boulders place belongs to Habitats sites and four kinds of European interest habitats there are founded.
